SpaceSlog Demo, Steam Next Fest and another update!



Welcome back SpaceSloggers!
SpaceSlog will be taking part in Februarys Steam Next Fest, where you can go play the demo right now!

The demo gives a generous 12 in game days for you to play, for as many times as you like and will be up for roughly 3 weeks, or one week after the end of SNF.
As usual, I will continue to update and improve the demo over the course of this time, so be sure to leave suggestions, feedback and report any issues you may find. Whilst regularly checking back to try the updated demo.

With that we have also released another new update, which you can read more about below.


New menus for planets and stars.

This not only makes it easier to select and see information about these objects as you pass, or drop by them, but it also paves the way for the eventual planetary landings that will be added to the game soon.
You may also notice some of the new UI improvements here too.


Improvements to rooms.

Rooms have been updated with various new features. They now track their size, cleanliness and types. The type can be changed in the currently selected room menu (by holding Alt and left clicking in the room area). Choosing Crew Quarters for example, will allow you to assign your crew to this room if there are enough beds available here.


Ship overlays.

New overlays have been added to give you a quick overview of your ships status. These include Temperature, Oxygen levels, Carbon Dioxide levels and how airtight your hull walls are.


Gameplay improvements

There have also been lots of gameplay improvements, particularly when it comes to player onboarding. I have tried to improve the ship construction experience too and the game will now show dynamic lessons whenever it thinks you may be struggling. Think of these lessons as the Operations Handbook helping you get familiar with life in the Slog.

The power systems have also been completely reworked. These previously used the same systems as the air and atmosphere, but it became apparent that whilst that works well for air, it doesn’t work so well for power, which requires various regulation. This has led to lots of improvements, including a large performance boost, but has also allowed us to add a battery backup system. Every ship transponder is now fitted with a battery backup as standard. This helps in situations where you run out of power and get stranded in the middle of space.

  • Rooms can now be assigned different room types.
  • Crew can be assigned to a room designated as a Crew Quarters, if there are enough beds inside.
  • Crew will attempt to automatically find a bed and assign themselves to that room if possible.

  • Added cleanliness to rooms and ships. You will now have a reason to keep your ship clean.

  • Added the ability to arrest collapsed pawns if you have a Brigg room type assigned.

  • Added some variation to the background nebula when travelling.

  • Various improvements to construction:
    • Made some construction less restrictive. ie, internal doors can be placed on externally, but will show a lesson the first time the player tries to do this.
    • Added dynamic lessons that will only show once the player has shown they are struggling.
    • Changed names of Hull to Ship Structure and Flooring to Deck Plating.
    • Deck Plating health is now the same as Ship Structure health.
    • Moved everything other than items that are used to create the ship structure out of the structure menu. This means internal doors, carpets etc have been moved.
    • Improved error messages that are shown when trying to place a building incorrectly.
    • Changed blast door names to airlock door.
  • Notification messages will now flash when being shown.
  • Reduced time to grow plants.
  • Reduce price of medikits.
  • Add new ship overlays:
    • Oxygen levels.
    • Carbon Dioxide levels.
    • Temperature levels.
    • Ship structure airtightness.
  • Add new alerts:
    • Ship attacked.
    • Fire started.
  • Pawns no longer get cosy bed thoughts if sleeping in a sleeping spot.
  • Reworked the power systems:
    • This has increased performance by around 20%.
    • Things will only be powered if the power surplus reaches the full power it requires.
    • Various other improvements.
    • The Transponder now also acts like a battery backup which can supply itself power plus an additional 60watts. This helps in situations where the player gets stranded with no fuel. The battery will last for around 10 days before needing to be re-charged again.
  • The cursor will now scale with the UI when running at 4k resolution.
  • Some pawn behaviour improvements.
  • Fixed: Various memory leaks.
  • Fixed: Structure stats were being added to a facility/ship before the structure had actually been fully constructed.
  • Fixed: Could not build a door next to a transfer vent.
  • Fixed: Crash when destroying plants.
  • Fixed: Crash when loading a game with active fires.
  • Fixed: Don’t cycle through dead pawns with hotkey.
  • Fixed: Hull health was not updating on the ship systems panel.
  • Fixed: Trying to force shoot a collapsed pawn could cause issues.
  • Fixed: Dead pawns shouldn’t gain thoughts.
  • Fixed: Skeletonised pawns would regrow flesh after a loaded game.
  • Fixed: Roles would not always be removed correctly on pawn removal.
  • Fixed: Dead pawns could be drag selected.

SpaceSlog updated to v0.10.0.5

Ive pushed a couple of updates over the last few days. You can see the changes below.

  • Added extra dye colours to carpets.
  • Reduced the price of dye and increased the stack size.
  • Updated French translation.

  • Fixed: Some issues with hints on the ship systems menu.
  • Fixed: Potential issues with batteries or air tanks not supplying power.

  • Updated calcs for how long until various things appear when travelling.
  • Increase planet variety.
  • Added new incident hostile swarm.
  • Improvements to pathfinding.
  • Improve controller movement and responsiveness when not using Steam Input.

  • Fixed: You can no longer try and heal dead pawns.
  • Fixed: Building Hull on Doors could cause issues. This is no longer possible.
  • Fixed: Pedals were being added as a controller and causing constant cursor movement.
  • Fixed: Controller would not work if not launched via Steam but Steam was running.

And then there was light.. and more FPS.. and a demo drop!…

Today I have released a new update for SpaceSlog over on Steam and Epic, you can see the full changelog below. To celebrate this release the demo has been re-enabled which I will keep for the next few days.

Don’t forget you can support us by either purchasing the game over on Epic or wishlisting over on Steam.

  • Added a new item – Standing Lamp.
  • Added a new lighting grid system. Every cell now has a light value which is adjusted by the various lighting sources in the game.
  • Added several new thoughts:
    • Low light.
    • Dislike darkness.
    • Like darkness.
  • Added new characteristics:
    • Nyctophobia.
    • Nyctophilia.
  • Outside and indoor areas will now react to different lighting. This fixes complaints that space was too dark making it difficult to see.
  • Outdoor areas will be slightly brighter when in the vicinity of a star.
  • Exposed and expanded more JSON files/data for modding.
  • Ensure thoughts slept on floor and slept in comfy bed cancel each other out.
  • Added hotkeys to cycle through player pawns. (, cycles backwards) (. cycles forwards)
  • Ensure any hotkey cannot be pressed when the escape main menu is open.
  • Don’t get prompted to save when quitting if you have already just saved.
  • Added a confirmation dialogue when deleting or overwriting saved games.
  • Updated some incident prompts to make it more clear that you need to drop out of high burn.
  • Added an option to adjust the tooltip delay.
  • Change the hours to roll over at 23 and start at 0 like a normal 24h clock.
  • Lots of refactoring, dramatically improving performance.
  • Change tooltips, fixing various issues with going off screen, or flickering when updating.
  • Add some extra missing tooltips.
  • Various AI improvements and fixes.
  • Add more guards to ensure saved games are verified before removing the old save. This guards against corruption or other save issues.
  • If a pawn is commanded, you can no longer tell them to sleep or rest until healed as it causes issues with them still being commanded.
  • Move more text to JSON for localisation.
  • Factions now have leaders.
  • Improved how manually attacking pawns works.
  • Pawns will now holster their weapons when not in combat or commanded.
  • Improved pawn view on various menus and added to extra menus like the trade and crew menu.
  • Improved selecting single pawns.
  • Added some new incidents and various other gameplay improvements.
  • Fixed: Flooring could be placed next to prefab hull, which could cause a breach.
  • Fixed: Ducting or Cables would not highlight when constructed if the highlight is meant to show.
  • Fixed: Cables or Ducting was being destroyed with walls.
  • Fixed: Cables or Ducting would sometimes leave their highlight texture behind after being destroyed.
  • Fixed: Ensure pawn health status is set on initial spawn.
  • Fixed: Not all incidents would be removed upon entering high burn when they were supposed to.
  • Fixed: Not all pawns would be removed if outside the ship upon entering high burn.
  • Fixed: Ensure all items spawn when loaded in the exact same place they were saved.
  • Fixed: Incorrect mood values when loading a saved game. (Will only work on a new game)
  • Fixed: Ensure building stops when the prefab is forbidden.
  • Fixed: NPC ships cargo now saves and loads correctly.
  • Fixed: Saving and loading pawn AI pathing could sometimes be incorrect.
  • Fixed: Various crashes that could occur.

SpaceSlog has now been released on Epic!

Please remember the game still has bugs and various missing features and is a long way off from a full game. Hence why this is mostly a stealth release. However, your support is greatly appreciated and will help to make the game better, much quicker.

It also allows us to open up our wiki and translations, which you are all welcome to contribute to. All of this will help when we come to release on Steam.

I hope to push updates for the game every couple of months, with the first one being fixes and improvements. After I am happy with the current condition of the game, i will then start to add new features like:

  • The galaxy map
  • Planetary landing
  • Ship to ship combat
  • etc.

Though these will likely be tailored towards what you all want first.

Epic does allow refunds. Though you have to have less than 2 hours in game and it should be within 14 days of purchase. So if you are unhappy with the current condition of the game, you can always refund and wait a little longer to purchase it.
